What students think

I think the Haven is good because I feel safe and welcomed.  The lessons are more fun and I’m allowed to contribute to class discussion and speak with the teachers when I feel I need support – this means I enjoy doing work and I am more confident for my exams.  My attendance is much better since coming to Haven and I am respected and supported rather than punished for my difficulties.

Charlie

The Haven is very welcoming and everyone is treated equally.  I struggled with my mental health tremendously and I didn’t feel like I was supported in mainstream school.  When I first started at Haven I was showered with more care and support in one week than I received in a whole year at mainstream school.  I always feel safe and included and the teachers genuinely enjoy educating us and love to help us to learn new things.  I didn’t go to school for 5 months but I have attended Haven every day because I feel appreciated while doing work and get validation for what I have achieved

Hannah

I haven’t been able to attend school for 2 years due to severe social anxiety but ever since I’ve been welcomed to Haven, my attendance has improved and I can attend without having a worry in mind.  This is going to be a brilliant help to me in the future and I am now much more confident than I ever was.

Staff take the time to help me more and I like that. I know all the staff and they know me by my name when they talk to me. This makes a difference and I feel I have a really good relationship with all the staff in Horizon. I fell that I learn more here and make more progress. I do want to go back to mainstream though and be a good student this time, Horizon have helped me realise what I need to do better next time and I am really grateful for everything they do for me and the other students.

Bobbie

I like how quiet and calm it is in Horizon, I found my old school too loud and busy. The staff at Horizon explain things well and take the time to go through anything I don’t understand, this helps me and my confidence. I have also enjoyed the range of lessons and activities here, we are well rewarded when we get things right in school.

Keevie

I really enjoy attending Horizon, I really feel the staff are very respectful to students here. I feel that I get more work done than I did in mainstream because of the small class sizes and the teachers take time to listen to you and find out how they can support you. It’s a brilliant school, that really supports the students and wants what is best for us.

Charlie

The staff at the Horizon School take time to listen and build relationships with all the students. I was really worried about coming to the Horizon School but I soon realised there was nothing to worry about. I still want to go back to mainstream school and the staff at the Horizon School will help me with this.

Since I have been at the Horizon School I have improved my attendance. I enjoy going to Evolve that the Horizon School set up for me.

Martyn

I like coming to the Horizon School. You get to do outdoor activities as well as lessons. The groups are small which helps me cope better in lessons. I like this.

Jordan

I like the Horizon School because I am allowed to play football if I have behaved well in lessons. I like working in a small group and I like that my teachers take time to help me. My attendance is a lot better at the Horizon School.

Bradley

I have a better relationship with the teachers at the Horizon School. They listen to me and help me with my work.

I like doing food technology on a Friday afternoon. I have made pizza, shortbread and cookies. This will help me for when I have to cook for my children in the future.

Lily

I like doing music technology, food and art. I like that I get rewarded for my good behaviour.

The Haven has helped me to grow in confidence, meet new people and experience new things.  The teachers have supported me throughout my GCSE’s and continue to encourage and help me to make my next step in my education.

Ever since joining the Haven, my attendance has massively improved.  I have been supported in more ways than I can imagine.  Without the Haven I don’t know where I’d be.  The teachers are incredibly understanding and very nurturing.  There has not been one moment where I have felt anxious to be here.  Everyone is so welcoming.

Sadie (Student)

The Haven has much smaller groups which is more manageable.  There is less chaos in comparison to in mainstream schools.  It provides a comfortable environment for me to learn.  I have 100% attendance here and I’ve always felt completely supported ever since I started coming here.  The school has opened up many opportunities which weren’t available for me at mainstream school, such as Right Trax and Groundworks.

Michael (Student)

The Haven helps me to maintain my education despite my medical condition.  I like it at this school because the teachers listen to you and help you out when you are in need of it.  I feel more comfortable coming here more than I did going to a mainstream school because there is less students and it’s more relaxing.
